The fruits of patty-cake - today's edition

The deal is inked, and the UN Security Council has signed off on it. So what does the other signatory besides the P5+1 have to say at the outset of this new age of unicorns and rainbows?

A senior Iranian cleric delivered Friday prayers in Tehran while standing behind a podium that declared, “We Will Trample Upon America,” according to photos released by Iran’s state-controlled media.
Iranian cleric Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani, who was handpicked by the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader to deliver the prayers, delivered a message of hostility toward the United States in the first official remarks since a final nuclear deal was signed between Iran and world powers in Vienna last week.
A Persian-language message on the podium declared, “We will trample upon America” while the English phrase “We Defeat the United States” can be seen underneath.
Friday prayers are known for being officially sanctioned by the state and a sign of the supreme leader’s thinking on various issues. Analysts who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon about the anti-American tone of last week’s prayers said it is a sign Tehran believes it bested the United States in the talks.
“The slogans of the Iranian nation on Al-Quds Day show what [Iran's] position is,” said the Middle East Media Research Institute. “The slogans ‘Death to Israel’ and ‘Death to America’ have resounded throughout the country, and are not limited to Tehran and the other large cities. The entire country is under the umbrella of this great movement [of 'Death to America'].”

I repeat, anyone who refutes the plain fact that the Most Equal Comrade regards the nation he presides over with utter contempt is an agent of darkness.

  2. Even Kerry is kind of troubled. Keeping the peace is like warring beyond when you should stop which was done in 'Nam.

"I don't know how to interpret it at this point in time, except to take it at face value, that that's his policy," Kerry said in an interview with Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television, parts of which the network quoted on Tuesday.

"But I do know that often comments are made publicly and things can evolve that are different. If it is the policy, it's very disturbing, it's very troubling," he added.

  3. "I think President Obama's belief and our military assessments, our intelligence assessments, are that if they organize themselves correctly, all of the Arab states have an untapped potential that is very, very significant to be able to push back against any of these activities."-John Kerry, 7/20/2015

  4. Yeah, untapped potential as in the they will pursue their own nuclear arsenals. Won't that be nice?

  5. I think the untapped potential is the modernity of the younger generation over there. Should we kill it? Might look good for your side if we turn it down but what about our credibility with other nations if we put boots on the ground or more bombs in the air there? Things that make an evil fencesitter (ignorant cow in a cattle corral?) go hmmm.....

  6. this optimism by young people like Moghadam could be easily deflated if these talks fail, says Fouad Izadi, a professor at the faculty of world studies at Tehran University.

"Yes, there are young people here that would like to see better relations between Iran and the West," he says, adding "this new generation is following the negotiations very closely."

But if the talks fail, he says, it would be "a disaster for the West's interests in this part of the world for many years to come."

For the parkour practitioners, though, there is little that seems insurmountable at this point.

They, too, are part of today's Iran, and just like the local park they practice in, they want to own it.

  7. The Most Equal Comrade failed to heed the call of the modern, well-educated, freedom-seeking Iranian populace during the Green Revolution of 2009. I am now utterly convinced he did so on purpose. That's how much he hates freedom.
