They smell weakness - today's edition

Russia sends strong signals in a post-American world:

Ah, the Obama-wrought era of American weakness.
From CNN.com:
For the second time in two weeks, a Russian warship in the eastern Mediterranean has approached U.S. Navy ships in what American military officials said was an unsafe manner, raising concerns about Russian intentions.
The latest incident took place Thursday when the Russian frigate Neustrashimyy came within 150 yards of the USS San Jacinto, according to U.S. military officials.
Could anyone have imagined Russia pulling off such a move 10 years ago? What’s changed? How did America become the schoolyard dweeb, subject to having our ears flicked until they turn red or having our books slapped out of our hands on the way to class?
"San Jacinto was never threatened by the erratic maneuvers, as San Jacinto maintained course and speed, but the closing distance by (the Neustrashimyy) before the ship turned away from San Jacinto is considered a high risk maneuver, highly unprofessional, and contrary to international maritime regulations," the Navy said in a statement.
"Conducting aggressive, erratic maneuvers and moving unnecessarily close to another ship in open ocean is inconsistent with prudent seamanship," the statement added. "We are concerned every time an unprofessional ship maneuvers occurs. These actions can unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries, and could result in dangerous miscalculations or accidents."
Leading from behind, believing that if we open our hands to show we have nothing and offering up our soft underbelly, that somehow the world will take pity and leave us be isn’t working.
Reports note that the Russian frigate had been engaged in “shadowing” operations of another U.S. ship, the carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, as it was conducting flight operations. During that time, the frigate engaged in more than one maneuver that was deemed “erratic.”
This is also the same frigate that approached the USS Gravely several weeks ago, close enough for U.S. Navy sailors to photograph the uncovered weapons on the ship.

A somewhat different definition of reset from that of Hillionaire.

  1. Are we, not, as Putin recently stated, the world's lone super power?

  3. Okay, found the remark you're referring to. So I guess that means none of the following things have occurred over the last year: The incident described in this post, cyber actors linked to Russ intelligence service carrying out a sophisticated cyber attack against Democratic National Committee computer networks, cyber penetration of the Pentagon's joint staff email server, infiltrations of unclassified networks at the White House and State Department, Russ testing of the supersonic glide vehicle Yu-71 launched atop a, SS-19 long-range missile, Russ Su-27 interception of a US Air Force RC-135 aircraft flying a routine route in international airspace over the Baltic Sea in April, and a Su-27 coming within 20 feet of a RC-135 over the Black Sea in January, Russia signing a sweeping air defense agreement with Armenia, covering a flow of arms such as advanced drone aircraft, helicopter gunships and ballistic missiles, Russ deploying of a SA-17 advanced air system near Turk-Syria border and targeting US planes with radar, Iranian General Qassem Soleimani (head of the IRGD Quds Force) going to Moscow twice in 2015 (with times after the signing of the patty-cake "agreement") to meet w/ Putin & other officials, Putin's 2015 visit to Teheran, two Tupolev Tu-142 Bear aircraft flying as low as 500 feet over the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, and deliberate Russ targeting of US-backed forces in Syria.

Man, glad to know none of that happened. Takes a load off my mind.

  4. His 4th of July message to America was also very nice and hopeful, the sort of thing you'd expect from the leader of the Neo-Orthodox world order where men are men, women are women and gays are jailed.

Since we are the sole world power, shouldn't we just treat Putin and other aspirants like little ankle biters?

  5. Well, you see, that's not what Russia under Putin is,per the list of aggressions I cite. To say, "He's on record calling the US the one superpower! Therefore that's the end of the matter!" Is to willfully ignore the tide of events since the MEC has been orchestrating post-America's decline, as demonstrated not only by Russia, but by Iran, China, ISIS and North Korea as well.

  6. He can afford to sound gracious. He is in the ascendancy

  7. Well, I don't know about you, but there have been times during my 66 years on this planet that I have been a whole lot more worried about Russia. Turned out to be a bunch of military-industrial bull crap basically. A few of my countrymen did bleed real blood and some cried for their mothers in a crazy-ass jungle scene we invented.

  8. No, the Communist government of North Vietnam invented that in the late 1950s by fostering the creating of the National Liberation Front in South Vietnam and working with it to bring down the South's government, in violation of the 1954 Geneva accord.

With regard to Russia today, the significance is that it is of a piece with how all our other adversaries and enemies are behaving. As I call this series pop posts, they smell weakness. There is consensus all over the world that th United States of America is now different in character than it has ever been, and that includes the loss of will to defend its interests and preserve its stature.

  9. Now, that's the end of the digression into Vietnam. This post is about Putin-era Russia.

  10. Well you and the rest of the world are simply wrong about our lack of will. We don't even need will aa undisputed king of the hill.

  11. You really need to see a professional about your relationship to reality. Go back through the litany of provocations coming from Russia I cite in this post. Re-read the post about the contempt and provocation Iran has shown us since last summer's "agreement," let alone the contempt it showed us prior to the "agreement." ISIS attacks now occur pretty much weekly. that organization has beheaded several Americans and has not paid any kind of price for doing so.

There is a lot of this business of looking squarely at what is and describing it as something else entirely going around these days. It is utterly mad.
