Distant past ages us, but males were all ussies upon graduation prior to 1971 or so, as is us selective issuances entering the service, cattle prodded to become brainwashed during basic training and then being deployed where told to, in no uncertain terms.
Yes, it was a pretty horrendous time, our classmates coming home in body bags or maimed physically and psychologically. No way to sugar coat the forced mission (for many) to stop the spread of communism in southeast Asia.
Have you forgotten when forced conscription yanked grads out of their beds and into Uncle Sam's bunks?. And bunkers?

ReplyDeleteAnd I'm unclear of the connection between a reference to the conscription in America's distant past and Perez's message to Oberlin grads.
