Freedom-Haters behind the eight-ball

There's a frequent commenter here at LITD who, in the last couple of days, has taken to saying that Congressional Pubs have no mandate. Something about the raw numbers of votes nationwide cast for Pub Senators vis-a-vis those cast for Freedom-Haters.

Um, about that:

The victory of Donald Trump for the presidency and the continued Republican control of the House and Senate is only part of the story of the Democratic Party's total demise.
Expected to make modest gains in state legislatures across the country, the Democrats instead lost governorships, lost two state legislative chambers, and now have total control of only five states -- the fewest number in their history.
Perhaps the loudest bell tolling for the death of the Democrats is in Kentucky, where Republicans gained control of the state Senate for the first time in a century. This means that for the first time in history, there is not a single state legislative chamber controlled by Democrats in the old Confederacy.
In the Electoral College, where Republicans took six of the ten biggest prizes for the first time since the Reagan years, Democrats should no longer be considered a national party. They are, at best, a coastal party with a few liberal enclaves -- mostly college towns like Madison, WI, and Austin, TX -- in between.

What would that's-not-a-mandate types have Pubs do? Sit passively and wait for Freedom-Haters to announce a legislative agenda and then see where common ground can be reached?

LITD has seen plenty of that, even coined a term for it: Reasonable Gentleman Syndrome. Most of those afflicted with it have either died (politically speaking) or are being treated for it.

It's called capitalizing on the opportunity to see conservative principles applied to the issues of the day. This is the moment. I don't think there are enough fools in the GOP anymore to run it into its familiar ditch.

I can't imagine more of a mandate than Pubs have at present.

Of course, you'll notice I'm hedging my bets. I said I don't think there are enough fools left in Pub ranks. Always gotta hedge your bets with Pubs.

One downer note: the difficulty Pat McCrory is having reaching the requisite number for a victory in his quest to retain his seat as North Carolina governor. He is one of the true heroes. Prayers that he pulls it out.

  1. Power does not mean mandate. Pubs are in power now. Over half of those eligible do not register. Though it was far from record turn-out, more registered voters in the United States of America who voted on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 (and before), voted Democratic. You now have the power. Not the mandate. Over half the registered voters who voted in the 2016 presidential election voted Democratic. That is not at all total demise. As for Trump, the current backlash is for what his foul mouth has roared out for all the see and hear over the past year. He's already back tracking. Now he's being portrayed as Mr. Nice Guy wanting to bring us all together. Exactly the opposite of what your ilk expects. Tweet on, tweet on Mr. President! All the little citzies on Loser Street love to watch the Prexy go tweet tweet tweet. Forgive us for believing him.

  3. The President-elect formerly derisively known as Sqiirrel Hair here has already back pedaled on lobbyists (his transition team includes them as much as any of his former opponents), repealing Obamacare in full and making Mexico pay for the wall. Dream Children may be low pri for shipment home too. Just wait till the big ground breaking for this boisterous fool when he starts work on your long awaited wall. You'll see what mandate means. When's he jailing Hillie? I expect Nettie will be singing his praises soon. Oh, wait till the next terrorist attack. I hear ISIS is ecstatic that they might finally get what they want. And what rough beasts slouch towards Secretaries of Defense & State. Now those Trump has insulted are expected to kiss his asinine agenda like the wretched Pubs panting for their power. Power, not mandate. The nuclear suitcase and codes will now be borne by a man with many messes already left behind. There will be no never minds from a huge chunk of the populace worldwide if he does all he said he'd do to get elected.

  4. If you think this is some kind of Squirrel-Hair cheerleading site, you're badly mistaken.

  5. Cruzin' along to 2020. If you follow his lead, all will be well, the world will be heaven, unless it's in hell.

  6. The nuclear suitcase is a great burden for anyone. Every President deserves the respect of the title Mr. President. Eroding the American Democracy by demeaning each Executive in place only undermines our Country.

What best defines the election is Wall Streets great drop the night of the election, then it roaring back the next morning. Think of all those instant transactions and how much useless profit this made.

    I like the blog.
