Sheriff David Clarke gets it

Releases a public service announcement for Milwaukee radio urging citizens to take firearms safety training so that they can be proactive agents in their own defense if their homes are ever violated. Says not to depend solely on 911.

  1. That is total horseshit. I would guess that directive is quite controversial in the jurisdiction where it is running. WTF? I am guessing a lot of citizens might not want to spend the time and/or money for either firearms or training and are of course wondering what they elected this boob for.

  2. I doubt whether the mayor can fire this idiot but it is reported that Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett lashed out at the ad. His office said in a statement: "Apparently Sheriff David Clarke is auditioning for the next Dirty Harry movie."

  3. The ad has generated sharp criticism from other area officials and anti-violence advocates. The president of the Milwaukee Deputy Sheriffs' Association, Roy Felber, said it sounds like a call to vigilantism.

"That doesn't sound too smart," Felber said. "People have the right to defend themselves, but they don't have the right to take the law into their own hands."

  4. Jeri Bonavia, executive director of Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort, said Clarke took a dangerous position with his ad. She pointed to the case of George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida who fatally shot an unarmed 17-year-old following an altercation. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming self-defense under Florida's "stand your ground" law.

"I feel like this is such an irresponsible thing for our chief public safety officer of a county to do," Bonavia said. "I think he owes this community an apology. And if he really believes that he's not capable of providing for our public safety he should get a different job."

  5. One's body and one's domicile are sovereign space. You have a constitutional right to defend them against violation. No one can take that right from you. Anyone who tries does not love America.

  6. This Sheriff Joe Wannabe is just pissy because his budget got cut.

Crime is relatively rare in Clarke's jurisdiction: In 2010, the Sheriff's Department reported two burglaries, nine robberies and zero murders. (Preliminary data from 2012 were not available, and it's not clear if the department submitted its crime statistics to the FBI for 2011.)

Also rare are justifiable homicides in the U.S.: About 260 private citizens lawfully killed someone committing a felony in 2011, or less than one case per every 1 million people in the nation.

  7. Why do you want the public to be unarmed and the government to have a monopoly on having guns?

  8. Lest that seem over the top, I really can't come up with any other interpretation of your objection to the sheriff's public-service announcement.

  9. The public can stay armed in my book. But you can understand that even Ronnie would have to address this issue after the recent spate of mass shootings. What did he have to say about his ex-presser taking on the gun lobby after he was maimed? Prediction: there will be another ban on assault weapons and armor-piercing ammo. You are going to lose on this issue. As for this Sheriff Joe Wannabe. He is full of it saying that people in his jurisdiction need to hit the shooting ranges. Just look at the crime stats there. Nothing at all to be worried about.

  10. I don't think we'll lose. Not if this is pursued Constitutionally.
