Friday roundup

Enjoy this weekend's pause in the ever-ratcheting tension between North Korea and the US: On Monday, the next round of the US-South Korean semi-annual military drills get underway.

A day after the Barcelona massacre, a huge fire has broken out at an industrial park next to the Barcelona airport.

The guy who stabbed a bunch of people at the market square in Turku in Finland shouted "Allah Akbar" before he let loose.

Another one of Squirrel-Hair's advisory panels pulls the plug on itself. This time, it's the one on arts and humanities.

As you know, LITD regards Matthew Continetti's 2015 essay "Revenge of the Radical Middle" as perhaps the most important piece of sociopolitical observation of the last decade. His latest, which posits that post-America now has "a new, combustible, four-party system" seems destined to join that one in stature. I'll be thinking about it for some time, but I'm already wondering if exception might be taken, along the lines that each of those four parties has fault lines within it. That's how fractious post-America is in the summer of 2017.

  5. Active conservatism, an independent silent majority, these are becoming sometimes opposed to each other. I wonder why? These two opposed groups work within the same societies, surely there is some common ground?

  6. Common ground is where reasonable gentle persons tread. Conservatives and the left don't have room for other opinions.

  7. “In many ways I think I can be more effective fighting from the outside for the agenda President Trump ran on. And anyone who stands in our way, we will go to war with,” Mr. Bannon said on Friday.
