Judging a late-nineteenth-century worldview from a post-American perspective, and thus indicating to the kiddies that that is how history must be approached.Laura Ingalls Wilder’s name will be removed from a major literary award over how the author of “Little House on the Prairie” depicted minorities in her in books. The decision to nix her name on the award, changing it from the “Laura Ingalls Wilder Award” to the “Children’s Literature Legacy Award” comes after a unanimous vote by the Association of Library Service to Children’s board. That decision was met with a “standing ovation by the audience in attendance,” the group reported.“This decision was made in consideration of the fact that Wilder’s legacy, as represented by her body of work, includes expressions of stereotypical attitudes inconsistent with ALSC’s core values of inclusiveness, integrity and respect, and responsiveness,” the Association for Library Service to Children said in a statement after the vote. The award is given to “an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children,” according to the organization’s website.
Can the culture undergo anymore rot without completely dissolving?
The first award was given to Wilder in 1954. The ALSC says Wilder's work continues to be published and read but her "legacy is complex" and "not universally embraced."
ReplyDeleteI can't see the ALA which fights for intellectual freedom banning her books though. Can we really say that is when America was great though? Not that America is all that great right now, but gosh darn it, we're exceptional.

So, the ALA is all powerful in changing history. Unbelievable. What you should be encouraging is more creative current material for everyone. It's hard to find a book that isn't running close to pornography, and you find it easier to pick on Ms. Wilder. What a waste of time.

Ah, progressive nazis. Just can't help yourselves, can you? Pretty much making your award irrelevant.

Good comments. Gives me hope that there are still some people resistant to the Kool-Aid.
ReplyDeleteShe actually had the little girl in her novels aghast at some of the stringent hateful views of her elders such as the old saw, "the only good Indian is a dead Indian." If I'd been the only man on the 5 "man" committee I'd have objected.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear it. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteWhat will be lost as reading anything but STEM becomes old hat? Why, we'll build a space force to go blindly where no man has gone before..,
