If not the Taliban, then who are we fighting over there in their own land? How do you negotiate an end to hostilities without bringing all parties to the table? We have been over there nearly a decade now. Is this fun and games, shits and giggles to you? Wouldn't you shoot down a helicopter full of troops preparing to kill you in your own land? Of course they are religious brutes and not even now "in power" there. Of course this was first a war of vengeance (we all know how long it took and who finally took-out Bin Laden) which turned into a Bush Doctrine effort to spread our democracy to countries either unfit or unwilling to assume it. You can talk and kill at the same time. How long did the Paris Peace Talks take to proceed absolutely nowhere, nearly a year spent arguing over the shape of the table as we continued to pound down more firepower than all the combined forces dropped during the last Big One? You never believed in much statecraft anyhow. So they wasted 32 of our finest, we wasted them and so we go on into the next decade. Have you met any of these kids coming back from multiple tours with serious PTSD? Still serious shit, takes a long time to convince anyone at the barrel of a gun too...
Of course I think we are the good guys. It's my country too you know, and I pledge allegience to the flag just like you do. We are stll the invaders like we were in 'Nam and Iraq, so don't act surprised they want to kill us too is all. I have heard it said so many times that it all boils down to kill or be killed. Obviously no army in history has suffered zero casualties in this stupid game we will likely never outgrow.

ReplyDeleteYou defeat your enemy, period. There is no real peace until there is a victor and a vanquished.
ReplyDeleteAnd they view it the same way, as you know. We are the invaders there, also as you know. I guess you are saying we need to escalate. Mercy mercy me...
ReplyDeleteWhether we are the invaders or not is an entirely separate issue from whether we are the good guys or the bad guys.
